Mambo Italiana
We (Nikonabike, Technophobe, LooseCanon and I) landed in Sorrento on Thursday evening, but have been on self-imposed Blip-silence – the reason why will become clear on Saturday’s Blip.
Had an extremely interesting visit today to Herculaneum. We went on the train from Sant'Agnello (about 1 mile east of the centre of Sorrento). The temperature was scorchio. Inside train was so hot that I couldn't rest my arm on the window ledge as it burnt. It was well worth it though.
We decided to have a guide which was well worth every Euro. She showed us things and explained everything in great detail, and I’m sure that we would have missed out on a lot had we not had her assistance.
This view shows much of the old town, which was destroyed at the same time as Pompeii. The arched structures are the old boathouses, as this was where the sea came to in those days. The boathouses are full of reconstructed skeletons (not the original ones as those cannot be displayed) and if you look at this in large you may be able to see them. Presumably many people gathered in the boathouses attempting to get onto boats to escape the pyroclastic flow being emitted from Vesuvius nearby.
In the evening the four of us met up with another couple of friends who are staying in Sorrento for a fabulous meal at a nearby restaurant. We had to go down a ramp, and then steps, and then a lift, more steps and another ramp to get to it – a bit like London Underground. However, when we popped out of the subterranean warren onto the veranda overlooking the Bay of Naples, the view was fantastic.
