Smike's grave, Bowes.
Dickens saw this grave on an investigative trip to the Yorkshire schools. Misinterpreting the evidence, he wrote Nicholas Nickleby, and brought ruin to the village. All the schools, some of which were quite progressive, closed within a year, and the population of the village shrank from 1,000 to 300. Bowes is only just beginning to recover.
