King Penguin Chick

Since the Calgary Zoo celebrated the arrival of it's penguins, there have been many chicks hatched by the various penguins there...this, however, is the first king penguin chick!  Behind the chick is it's father, and on the left side of the photo you can just see the edge of the wing belonging to another king penguin.

If the father penguin appears grumpy, it is because he was!  Very very grumpy!  The other king's in the enclosure have a great deal of curiosity when it comes to the chick which means the poor father has to tirelessly defend his offspring from the other penguins.  I watched him do battle several times keeping his prized little child safe from harm.
