16th October 1939

On the above date a Luftwaffe Heinkel 111 swooped low over Portobello High street, it's target Rosyth dock yards, and as a wee Brucie bonus it was going to take some pot shots at Portobello power station (the place where the high voltage national grid was launched in 1936).
It was being pursued by 2 RAF Supermarine Spirfires from 603 Squadron, and a dog fight took place over Portobello.During the engagement Joe Mcluskie was up a ladder fixing his window in Abercorn terrace, when he sustained a wound to the stomach from a German bullet, and survived only after an emergency operation.

The Heinkell was shot down and all 3 Luftwaffe crew were killed, and were buried in Portobello Cemetary (Milton road) with full honours being observed, including the coffins being draped with the Swastike.
With todays blip I was going to show the straif bullet holes in Kings road caused by the dog fight, but I couldnt be sure which were which, so I thought the shifting sands would look better visually.
