Art Project - Skies
We were asked in class to pick a theme, something we want to work on drawing, as a project. We will show our progression of learning this topic/theme through our trial and error in our sketchbooks and blogs.
My topic/theme is the sky. I want to draw the sky and the different amazing ways we see it.
How did I make my choice of topic?
I have always been fascinated by the sky, so as soon as our teacher asked what we wanted to do for our topic, that instantly came into my head. I love photography, and I love looking at things from perspectives. The sky is so vast and so curious and most can agree that it is so beautiful.
How is the topic connected to me personally/culturally?
I honestly don't know. Whenever I'd go on car trips in the US with my family, I'd always just watch the sky and really stare at it and try to figure it out. One time I took a trip to the mountains with my youth group, and I remember that one of my favorite parts of that trip was at night when we would sit in front of a campfire under a sea of stars. As a "wanna-be" photographer, I always love taking pictures of the sky, especially sunsets. It takes my breath away. Ever since I was little, I would try to wake up extra early just to see the sunrise. It was like a treat for me, a special thing even though it happens every day.
Who were other artists that worked on a similar topic?
- I know right off the top of my head, "Starry Night" by Van Gogh, which has always inspired me.
- After some research, I discovered that Ken Boshe (a contemporary landscape Scottish artist who is still alive today paints beautiful skies and clouds.
- I also found John Constable, who studied clouds and did a series of them in his art work. He is a British artist.
