demise of an icon
Took Felix to Newhailes to watch the demolition of the smoke stacks of Cockenzie Powerstation. The position was good although the weather wasn't as promised. A bit hazy and everything ended up grey in grey. Ah well, at least it didn't rain or worse.
I am sad to see it go, it was an iconic building and I think quite elegant. Apart from anything else it was an industrial monument. It is quite funny how we are keen to preserve buildings from a few hundred years ago, but are quite happy to get rid of some of the newer ones. Ah well, it was quite a spectacle. Not sure why they didn't blow up the turbine hall once they were at it.
More pictures from before and during the event on flickr.
Update: looking more closely at the pictures - the turbine hall actually did go - it is the low building in front of the main hall.
Update II: well worth reading the article by Fraser MacDonald
