Mono-Monday: "Past" - Newcastle Castle Keep

The history of Newcastle castle goes back 2000 years, beginning with the Romans and the fort of Pons Aelius on Hadrian’s Wall, which lay beneath the present Castle Keep. When the Romans left Britain in 410 AD however the fort fell into ruin.
When the Normans invaded England in 1066, they had a long fight to subdue the North of England. They built a timber castle as part of this fight, and apparently it was that castle which actually gave the city its name. The timber one was replaced with this stone keep by Henry II in 1168-78. I guess it must have been well built as it still stands today, as you can see - although some of the stonework has been replaced following the ravages of weather and pollution.
Being over 800 years old I think this should qualify for today's MM challenge of "past"! Many thanks to chantler63 and B4YUU for hosting again :)
