Fish Fry

There has been a lot of "activity" in the pond this summer, which has resulted in many babies... This is a small fry - just a little more than half an inch long. It is hard to see, but it is there in the shadow of the plant.

The biggest baby goldfish are now over three inches long and swim happily with the big fish. There are both koi and goldfish in the pond. Based on the colours of this and the other similarly sized fry, I am hopeful that they are koi, but am not optimistic about their survival. Apparently baby goldfish love to eat koi eggs and will even snack on the fry, so despite millions of koi eggs and babies in July, none have survived. Next year, the naughty goldfish will have to be separated.
