I can see the sea!
Gill on top of the Cathedral in Ciutadella which is as the tour guide said - a great place to see the city from. The extra is the Czech half of our tour group, just to give an idea of the scale of the roof space. The other half were English speaking, the Spanish guide explained the features of the building in English, summarised in Spanish which the woman on the left of the extra translated into Czech ... great entertainment.
The cathedral itself is quite beautiful, in a 'less is more' way not often seen in churches, but it also illustrates the often quite harsh history of the island.
Originaly built as a mosque by the Moors it was taken down and rebuilt as a church with just the minaret reused as a bell tower, then taken by the Turks who didn't treat it or the locals at all well, re taken by Spain in the 1600s it was rebuilt in the classical style in the 17/1800s and then duffed up again in the Spanish Civil war. The island was briefly held by the British who - thankfully - had the sense to install a more sympathetic governor, Richard Kane, who set up a number of projects aimed at improving the lot of the locals. I can't help thinking he is the sort of chap needed in many places now!
