Roman mosaic
The Villa Romana dei Casale in Piazza Armerina, Sicily, is considered to have the most and/or best display of Roman mosaics anywhere. Much of the villa remains intact, although without its original roof, and every floor surface is covered in mosaics; in Roman times every inch of wall surface would have been painted as well. This detail of an elephant being trapped is from a huge floor mosaic depicting the hunting, capturing and shipping of animals to Rome from all parts of the known world including lions and giraffes from north Africa and tigers from India.
