Unlicensed trade

A night-time visit to the street market with Chiara (I felt she needed an old lady’s protection, walking the dangerous streets of Copacabana after 9 p.m.).

We found another old lady selling the football shirts Chiara wanted. As an unlicensed vendor, she was very nervous, afraid the police would swoop and confiscate her considerable stock of merchandise. A number of Spanish-speaking foreigners were interested in buying, but she was very muddled and lost a few sales due to the time it took her to root around in her bags and find what they wanted. We felt very sorry for her – but at least she offloaded a few shirts to Chiara.
