Air India Memorial
Today was the 27th Anniversary of the Air India Diasaster. In 1985 Sikh Extremists blew up a plane travelling from Toronto to Delhi, via Heathrow. 100 miles off the Irish coast a bomb planted on board exploded killing all 329 people on board. This is how the BBC reported it at the time. The bodies were brought to Cork and eventually Ahakista was chosen as an appropriate place to have a memorial. The sundial marks the exact time the disaster happened at 8.16 am and behind it are listed all the names of the victims. Each year at the exact time of the diaster, a service is held here and the photographs of those murdered are displayed. It is a heart -breaking scene for many of the victims were children returning home on holiday. Whole families were wiped out. This spot is beautifully kept and holds a special place in many peoples' hearts - the families especially, but also local people who have offered kindness each year to those who travel to remember the dead. I didn't go to the service this year but have just gone down to pay my respects.
Now, on a very shallow note, I'm fuming. I've just spent flipping hours in the hairdresser and handed over a princely sum and the end result is horrendous! As you know, I am a natural blond, but require a little enhancement now and again. She suggested a sprinkly of fine lowlights - well, I now have a dark splodges all over the place and a brown fringe - I am not impressed. Himself is keeping a very low profile and wisely is saying nothing. Grrrr.
And as you can see, it's lashing.
