Electric Avenue, Brixton
A lot of changes have been going on at Brixton Market and more changes to come, so I figured I'd best pay a visit before it changes beyond my recognition. Along Brixton Station Road the Network Rail is planning to evict the business owners underneath the arches on both sides of the railway bridge. The spaces will be gutted and then relet on the open market at increased prices, the existing businesses will be priced out and have little hope of returning to their premises. There's a petition on change.org. This all feels very familiar from other parts of London (and the UK) and of course in cities in the US, too. It was interesting wandering around the market, some things the same, some of it substantially changed, definitely a strong hipster vibe creeping in. The life cycle of cities, I guess.
