575 Wandsworth Road
Behind this pretty regular looking door is this. It is perhaps one of the oddest National Trust homes I've ever visited. A man decided to cover a damp patch on the wall in his basement with some woodwork, decorated it with some found fretwork and then from there he covered the interior of his entire house with hand whittled fretwork over the next 20 years. I love stuff like this but I have to admit it was a strange visit, made even stranger by the guide continually talking about the creator in the present tense, he is deceased. Yeah, I don't know about this one, it felt odd, like we were trespassing. The guided tour is only for 6 people as the house is so delicate and narrow, no shoes allowed either because of the painted floors, which were lovely.
The extra is the view across the street, which can be seen from the upstairs bedroom. The juxtaposition of the strange otherworldly interior with the concrete city exterior was interesting.
From here we went into Wimbledon for a late lunch and a wander around.
Woke up this morning to the hideous news of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Words fail. It was bizarre sitting on the tube and people's newspapers having that Oregon news across the front pages.
