making ends meet

This is Michael (another one) who prides himself in having managed to rent an apartment in Calgary for the last year and a half despite meagre means. He relies on collecting bottles and cans to supplement his income.

What you see in his supermarket trolley represents about 4 hours work. There was a big party at my place last night and I was glad to provide him with lot of empties.

I have noticed a growing tendency for many of the bottles to be collected by people in rather fancy cars driving around the back alleys and filling their car boots with empties. Michael and I both agreed that this is not really fair.
