One of the Few

The first day of a week's holiday, and it was a good one.

I'm spending the weekend with Mum, and we decided on some retail therapy at the Ashford Designer Outlet Centre.

Folkestone was our next port of call where I left Mum on the promenade whille I got some shots of the the beach. It was pretty blustery, and I managed to get some good shots of breaking waves on rocky outcrops.

Our final stop (for the obligitory ice cream) was a bit further down the coast toward Dover at the National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne, on the famous white cliffs of Dover. The memorial commemorates the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and September 1940, when nearly 3000 airmen fought the German Luftwaffe mainly, over the Channel. Their efforts, and in many case sacrifice, ensured Britain remained free.

The moving design of the memorial includes a 3 blade propeller cut into the clifftop and surrounded by grass ramparts - the full effect can probably only be seen properly from the air. At its centre is this seated airman, looking out across the channel.
