St Botolphs, Hardham.
This pretty little church near Pulborough has origins ddating back to the eve of the Norman Conquest in the 11th century. It has an almost complete set of wall paintings dating to the 12th Century. When people couldn't read the bible for themselves, these paintings told the bible stories in pictures. Today due to the ravages of damp and indiscriminate repair work, you have to work hard to get your eye in to see the pictures. They are supposed to be some of the best preserved in the country, so many were damaged during the reign of Henry VIII, It's worth going to view them before they disappear altogether. Must have been rather overwhelming when they were new, brightly coloured, filling the church from floor to ceiling. The same group of artists who painted these is thought to have painted probably another 6 or so churches around the area.
Managed to book a last minute break and doubt if I'll be able to post anything for a while. See you laater!
