Old and New

This photo is taken form just outside Aldgate tube station. The new is the Walkie Talkie. Much more interestingly is the old. The "old" is St Botolph Without Aldgate. There has been a church on the site for over 1000 years, with the 1st rector, Norman, recorded in 1108. The original Saxon building was enlarged in 1418 & almost entirely rebuild in the next century. Demolished as unsafe in 1739, the present church was consecrated in 1744. It was the work of George Dance the Elder, who also built Mansion House. I didn't have time to look inside, but have resolved to do so.
