What I've Done

Skaftafell Park looking toward Skaftafellsjokul.

Worth viewing LARGE

Tuesday was wet, pretty constant rain all day, but we had a wonderful day nevertheless. We started at Nupstadur, home to some of the oldest houses in Iceland, and some truly brilliant pictures - they looked like Hobbit homes. The main part of the day was taken up by a trek through the Skaftafell national park, a walk of around 10K, with about 400m of climb. By the time we finished, we were all very wet, but on reaching the top, the view over the Skaftafellsjokul Glacer was simply incredible. Getting to the edge to view the glacier was far from easy, as when this was taken, it was sheeting down, and the rocks were very wet and slippery. The Skaftafellsjokul comes off the huge Vatnajökull Glacier in the south east of the country. I blipped this pic, because it summed up to me the majesty and enormity of the power of ice. The sad part, is that the Glacier is receeding at an alarming rate, and has receeded by over a Kilometre in recent times.
