"It's like a modern painting"....
Arrived in Denmark after a calm flight...Ryanair, and all the "ta-da-da-da-da!...another flight arrives on time"...a few degrees cooler than Stansted, friendly faces of my sisters in law, K and B, waiting at the gate...a night in Silkeborg and then off in the morning to the little seaside town of Juelsminde where HL's mother, G., lives.
On previous visits we have stayed in the converted Victorian spa building, now converted into apartments for the elderly, complete with guest rooms and (bookable) dining rooms where the residents can hold a gathering or party. This time we rented a little house with a woodburner and seaviews just up the road.
It was touching to see G. again, she has had a few "bad turns" since I last saw her and a lengthy spell in hospital and convalescence so she is increasingly frail. She is doing well for 92. But the world inevitably closes in with gradually failing eyesight, declining hearing and a state of awareness that varies between sharp as a tack and lost in space. Everything from a reading book, coffee cup, medicines, cough pastilles, photo albums and a rolling zimmer frame arranged within reach of the armchair.
We are very thankful for the dedicated support of Hanne Lene's sisters, K and B, who visit most weekends.
Having a place of our own was great and meant we could cook, light the woodburner and invite G over for dinner. A song and dance involving wheelchairs and stuff but she was glad to get out for a change of scenery. Fortunately we found one of my favourite red wines in the local supermarket and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.
I took this photo of the street outside and the garage opposite from the bathroom window a little before bedtime. It reminds me a little of my father in law, H., who is no longer with us. In later years, he lived next to a suburban main road and a railway station, which was lit up at night like a Christmas tree. With his characteristic optimism, he used to say it was just like living in a modern painting.
