Beyond these idyllic dunes lies the dormant carcase of what was a few short days ago the second largest blast furnace in Europe.

With it go at least 3,000 local jobs if you include other businesses which depend on it, and our own ability to defend ourselves in the event of a major war
I worked in a cast iron foundry which is almost identical and most who did considered themselves fortunate if they lived to reach retirement age.
From my point of view I am torn between sympathy for these poor people who face hardship, and yet can acknowledge that plants like these were hell to work in and often lethal to the workforce.
Quite frankly back then, no one cared whether the workforce lived or died so long as production kept going.
I hope the Redcar workers had a more appropriate and humane management than we did.
