Day 7
We travelled up to gahini an hour and a halfs drive and stayed at the Seeds of Peace guest house on the shores of lake Muhazi overnight, in preparation for our trip into Akagera park in the morning. On arrival it was dark and we were met and showed to our rooms. It was sparce but very acceptable for the area. After a meal of chips and brochette ( a kebab on a stick). I settled down to sleep having tucked in my mosquito net tightly. Another early start and I woke at 5 am to find there was no electricity, I can now say putting contact lenses in in the dark is a new skill I have aquired. A quick breakfast. And we are in the road again and In an hour and a half we were at the park entrance. I am not an animal lover but a park is 1200 square km surely had something that could impress me. Well impressed and excited I was to see baboons grooming each other, 9 different kinds of antelope, wart hogs, zebra, and an array of birds to many to mention ( really I just can't remember there names). The most spectacular moment was when our guide spotted a large bull elephant, they are rarely seen here, normally choosing to stay in the heavy planted areas. There was great excitement on the bus and we all got armed with our cameras. We turned a corner and there he was in his full glory looking straight at us, he was huge and his tusks were muddy after foraging in the dirt. It was an awesome sight. We stayed for about 10 min then he Began flapping his ears, a sign he had had enough of us so we retreated and continued towatch from afar. Our incredible journey through the park took us 7 hours, a very memorable and exciting day for this mmmm.....non animal lover?? My picture today could only have been this lovely elephant.
