the New Cut at dusk

The New Cut is an artificial waterway which was dug out by hand between 1804 and 1809 to divert the tidal river Avon through south and east Bristol,   Locks were constructed at either end of the harbour docks to contain a constant  depth of water - hence the name 'Bristol's Floating Harbour'.
