Porosity

Fungi that produce spores (not all do) have specialist structures for the purpose. Boring? Well not really – if you’re trying to avoid being poisoned, spore bearing structures are a better guide than colour in most cases. The mushrooms you buy in the supermarket carry spores on gills, but other mushrooms have pores or teeth instead. This is why looking at the underside of a fungal fruiting body, such as this Turkeytail, is as important as looking at the top.
