A Kitten and a Bullet Hole
This is a photograph of a photograph. I visited the Warsaw Uprising Museum briefly, before heading off to the airport. They have some amazing shots that have been artificially coloured in.
"The past events seem set for ever, immobilised by the passing time. Colour, however, eliminates the distance separating us from the past".
See the original black and white version here.
This is Eugeniusz Zenon Lokajski, aka "Brok", a Polish athlete, gymnast and photographer. He took 840 photos during the Warsaw Uprising, and died when Warsaw was pulverised by the Germans (while the Soviets watched and the Allies did nothing). There is something about the look on his face that really "got to me", even when I was freezing in the Polish autumn, with a hangover. It's a great photo - he is smiling, holding a kitten with a bullet hole behind his head. He would have been killed a few days or weeks later.
