Tape Measure

Today has been lots more DIY. I began the day by sending the better half up into the loft space over the extension to relay the insulation that the builder had laid when the extension was built. When I say "lay" I really mean "throw" as that would be a better description. Once It was all correctly installed we filled in the missing joist spaces then laid another layer on top perpendicular to the joists. That now makes about 30 cm of correctly installed rather than 10 cm of badly installed insulation. The hope is that the extension will now not feel like a fridge in winter.

After the insulation was installed I fitted a pair of noggings and then we did most of the first fitting around the loft hatch. I got to play with my new (cheap) electric screwdriver which is a lot easier that screwing screws in with a non-electric screwdriver...

Our copious loft insulation, was free from Insulate Hampshire so the rest of the unused insulation went into the main loft which while somewhat older than the extension, has been topped up already, so it's gone from 15 cm to 45 cm in the sections we could reach and we'll do the rest once we've had the plumbing removed and more of the junk taken to the tip.

We also unblocked an eve vent at the front that the previous owner had blocked. While it does help to keep bids and wasps out, reducing the designed air-flow isn't a good idea in a vented loft space. We'll have to put a fine metal screen on to keep wasps out but that will go on the list for tomorrow.

Today's blip is another last minute DIY related one and as I couldn't find anything interesting in the crawl spaces of the house it's a tool. It's one end of a mighty useful tape measure. The inches don't half confuse my better half - who being raised in a country that abandoned medieval units centuries ago has no idea what they are. Having said that, I was born after this country went metric, I use metric first but not that many other people do...
