We started the day with a walk from Bouth, followed by lunch at the White Hart.
Then we travelled to have a look around Holker Hall, home of the Cavendish family (owners of the quarry I mentioned yesterday). Lord and Lady Cavendish have retired this year, and Lucy Cavendish is now in charge. The "New Wing" of the Hall was interesting and very tastefully done (and clearly still lived in), the older house is her home and out of bounds. The gardens are beautiful. The 400 year old "Holker Lime", planted in the 17th century, is a real giant in girth, and apparently voted one of the top ten British trees. But my blip is something much smaller !
On the way back to Gilpin Mill we stopped off at Humphry Head overlooking the salt marsh on the north side of Morecambe Bay, and then Cartmel and the Priory. It is years since we have been to this little town (cum village) and it has become a real foodie place with the success of the Michelin starred L'Enclume. For us however - the Punchbowl at Crossthwaite will be fine this evening.
