16th cent. Corbel

A corbel is a supporter of the vaulting on the church roof.
Here in Mid Calder Kirk there are many - one of these is this one. The coat of arms is from the very powerful family 0f Douglas - (heart) quartered with the arms of Sandilands (blue stripe). These lands once owned by the Douglas were given to the Sandilands family upon marriage in 1348. The church was rebuilt on the site of the old 11th century church by Peter Sandilands in 1540.
