South Bay, Scarborough
Despite the dire weather forecast of wind and rain we had a lovely day today. We had arranged to go to Scarborough to take our friend C out to lunch as it is her birthday.
The drive over the moor was slow with one heavy lorry stalling on a very steep bank which is single carriageway. Once it got going we managed to overtake him and his companion on the dual carriageway part at the top of the bank. Then just 6 miles out of Whitby there was another heavy lorry holding everything up so we had to crawl for most of that 6 miles at between 5 and 10 miles an hour. The journey which should have taken an hour and 20 minutes took about 2 hours.
Having arrived we drove down to the harbour and had a lovely lunch in the Italian restaurant. Followed this with a walk down to the beach and as you can see it was sunny and there was no wind at all.
The large building is the Grand Hotel which when completed in 1867 was one of the largest hotels in the world. The building is designed around the theme of time: four towers to represent the seasons, 12 floors for the months of the year, 52 chimneys symbolise the weeks, and originally there were 365 bedrooms, one for each day of the year. The hotel itself is in the shape of a 'V' in honour of Queen Victoria.
