The Aggregates Trail

The Aggregates Trail is a 4.5 mile section of the 17 mile Gipping Valley Walk between Ipswich and Stowmarket.   The Aggregates Trail starts at Needham Lake and ends in the village of Barham.   There is evidence over the years of quarrying for chalk, clay and flint with the pits now being filled with water and used for recreation purposes.    Needham Lake is used for rod fishing and model boat enthusiasts as well as being a lovely area for walking and picnics, Barham Pits are solely used for rod fishing.  It is thought that the Romans built some of their roads from aggregates extracted from some of the smaller pits.
