Fern Friday

Ferns have no flowers - they employ a complex system of reproduction involving spores which is no less worthy of attention. These hart's tongues growing on an old limey wall looked especially striking with their translucent fronds marked with the pattern of spore-bearing sori on the underside.
The long pointed leaves may resemble the tongues of deer but the botanical name Asplenium scolopendrium  contains other associations..
The generic name Asplenium , and another popular name, spleenwort, refers to the leaves' similarity in shape of that internal organ and according to the Doctrine of Signatures the plant was once used, quite without scientific basis, to treat illnesses arising from the spleen..
The specific name scolopendrium  means centipede in Latin, the lateral lines on the leaves resembling the  many legs  Well, perhaps.
