A day filled with art
Mumbai - day 4
Last night we had a remarkable reflection session. Initially the students wrote down their individual reflections and afterwards reflected as a group. A truly amazing experience to witness and participate in as a teacher.
As the the first days have been so busy and overwhelming, today's pace was a little slower - a day of permormance and visual art.
We have spent most of the day in the Worli school. In the morning we participated (yes, student and teacher alike) in an Indian contempary dance workshop under the guidance of Ms. Charmee. After a good warm up, where we also learned about space awareness, we learned all about steps, arm movements, facial expressions and the story behind a dance. We then incorporated all our learnings into a choreography on a popular Bollywood song. We closed off the workshop with dance and scarf movement. We had an amazing time.
After lunch we had another workshop. This time led by the Worli IGCSE art faculty. After receiving an introduction to Warli art. There was a choice to make a vanvas or apply our skills on emty bottles. After aaplying a colourful background (in one or more colours) we chose a simple Warli design to try out on our canvas/bottle in black or white paint. After a couple hours of intensive work the result was impressive (the canvas is missing from the photo as Gurleen is finishing that off in the hotel)!
Our day of art was closed off with a visit to the Nehru Centre in Worli, famous for the art history collection of India's rich history. We also visited the temporary exhibitions "Fluid Expressions" - a beautiful and diverse collection of water colours. The students were fortunate to meet, listen and interview some of the contributing artists.
At the moment everyone is enjoying a little down time (swimming, reading, reflecting or painting). Shortly we will go to dinner and the it is an early night as we need to wake up early. We will try and avoid the heat for our heritage walk of the 'old fort' area of Mumbai.
