with kudos coming from both alice walker and toni morrison, i had a fairly good idea what to expect with this book. published in 1937 it beautifully describes a young woman's quest for love and self fulfilment in small town america. a strong and independent woman, janie is married off by her grandmother at a young age. unsatisfied with her marriage, and certain she knows what love should feel like she leaves on a quest to find fulfilment. along the way she finds love, predjudice and loss.
for me it wasn't as powerful as the colour purple but i would definitely give it another read at some point.

"love ain't somethin' lak uh grindestone dat's de same thing everywhere and do de same thing tuh everthing it touch. love is lak de sea. it's uh movin' thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from de shore it meets, and it's different with every shore."
