Weeping Window
This is a close up of part of the "Weeping Window" art installation at Woodhorn Museum near Ashington in Northumbria, and the main reason for our weekend jaunt away. Both Jean and I had visited (separately) "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red" last year - the amazing mass of ceramic poppies that surrounded the Tower of London. Then I heard that this poppy installation, by the same people, was visiting a museum in Northumbria for a limited time this autumn. We decided that it was worth an excuse for a weekend away!
The sculpture is made of several thousand poppies and falls 55ft from the top of a former colliery winding wheel. The museum was busy with folks who had clearly all come to see it, and like the Tower of London last year, it was touching to see how much the sight of these poppies affected people.
