You Takes Your Chances
The beach was alive with heavy machinery this morning. They're building berms around the volleyball courts and pushing sand around up and down the whole area. The tide line seems to be higher than usual, and there is a prediction of rain for Wednesday, so maybe this is an exercise to prepare for winter storms. To add to that excitement, there was an engineered breach of the very toxic river on Friday, but apparently only about a foot of water was drained off, which then created an even bigger swamp on the sand in front of the roller coaster and seems not to have improved anything as far as water safety goes. There are signs posted at intervals all along the beach warning of terrible consequences to humans and animals from contact with the water, and they were rigging up an orange webbed fence to keep people away from the swampy area. One guy we ran into said, "Even the birds aren't sitting in that water," and he was right: we didn't see the usual suspects flying around. Although I was on the sand to begin with, I did choose to come back along the Boardwalk, which always yields some interesting color in the early morning.
