Chiang Mai ('New City ') is a medieval city in the a mountain valley at the north of Thailand. It was the capital of the Lan Na Kingdom for 500 years and still retains its original architectural style.
This building is the monastic library of Wat Phra Singh ('Temple of the Lion Buddha ').It was built in 1477. It is built on a stone base to protect the manuscripts from eventual flooding. The staircase is protected by two stone 'nagas ' (serpent-like mythical deities).
