Bread 'n butter pud eternal
In his definitive Oxford Companion to Food, Alan Davidson admits that bread and butter pudding "can be made with something more exotic than plain bread... and can be enlivened by judicious spicing or by reinforcing the currants with plumper sultanas and mixed peel. But such elaborations must be kept under strict control, so that what is essentially a simple pudding does not lose its character under the weight of sophisticated additions."
Variations abound: Rhubarb bread and butter pudding; ginger-jam bread and butter pudding; apple, rum and raisin bread and butter pudding; chocolate bread and butter pudding; marmalade spicy bread and butter pudding; white chocolate and raspberry bread and butter pudding; panettone bread and butter pudding; cherry bread and butter pudding; brioche bread and buetter pudding... full yet?
Now the weather has well and truly turned cold, our thoughts turn to the most comforting of comfort foods. But the desire to meddle is so great.
Step away from the bread and butter pudding, I say
