Paddling through time

A friend emailed me yesterday to say that the tides at the moment may be low enough to expose the drowned forest that is supposed to lie off the Sands o Wright. She's an archaeologist so knows about such things and asked if I could by any chance get down to take some pictures of it.

The day dawned bright and clear, albeit with a dark band of haar glowering out to sea, so I set off armed with vague instructions as to what to look for, wellies and camera. However as I am not an archaeologist and I don't know about such things, all I saw were rocks covered in sandy squishy stuff. I waded in fairly deep and poked about what might have been ancient tree stumps only to find more rocks. Then I cursed myself for not just paddling barefoot as wooses with wellies only ever end up with wet feet anyway.

Eventually though, I looked up from the waves to find the haar that had been lurking offshore had passed over me as it headed inland. It may just have been the cold of wet socks but I did shiver slightly and think I was almost glad I hadn't found the mesolithic forest... I might never have made it back through the mists of time.
