Why did the ants cross the footpath?

You'll have to look closely to see what I photographed here. It was quite hard to get the correct focus.

These ants were crossing the full width of a footpath and cycle path. They were going both ways. There was one little lost column that had diverted and were working to get back on track.

I hope not too many of them got squished!
