The difference one person makes

Sue leaves Thursday for ten days in California, and on her last day in town we decided to visit the reputedly beautiful Crumpacker Library, housed in the art museum. Neither of us has ever been there. Their offer of 33,000 volumes of art books in a sumptuous library with leather chairs and beautiful reading lamps called to us. I was hoping to find Sally Mann's and Cy Twombly's photographs, and Sue wanted to see some watercolor abstracts.

"The librarian retired, and until we can hire someone new, the library is closed." If you or anyone you know might like the job, here's the ad for it, thanks to Kacsac, a librarian in Sacramento.

We made do with another tour of the current exhibition, a little less thrilling the second time. We talked about the impact of seeing a work of art for the first time. There was a slide show next to this bronze torso, and the bronze picked up the changing colors of the slides.

I'll be feeling truncated, like the bronze, with Sue gone.
