Mima's World

By SheilaJellison

Unconditional surrender......This sculpture was inspired by an iconic photograph taken on August 14, 1945 when the Japanese surrendered, signaling the end of World War II.  Times Square in New York City was filled with people and in particular many returning sailors, soldiers and support personnel, including this young sailor and a nurse.  When the news broke about the end of the war, he grabbed the nurse and gave her a nice kiss, but in very dramatic fashion.
In 2006, sculptor Mr. Seward, lent this piece to the city of Sarasota for an outdoor art project.  We all fell in love with it and various people did fundraising to keep it here forever instead of just 4 months.
I've taken photos of it before, but today the sky was SO blue, I did a quick drive-by, hopped out of the car and VOILA!
