This is the local stately home which was built in 1834 on the site of and incorporating parts of a previous house dated around 1600 which in turn incorporated parts of a much older dwelling. It is Dunlop House, once home to the Dunlop family...one of whom was a lineal descendant of the brother of Sir William Wallace. It's colourful history endeared itself locally as one Mrs Dunlop became a great friend and correspondent of a young poet
named Robert Burns who lived on a farm not too far from here.
But times changed and many an estate fell by the wayside in the early twentieth century. Dunlop House found itself being used as a hospital for many years before falling into disrepair and abandonment. A few years ago a developer bought the house and has brought it back to life with the creation of nine apartments.
We walked up there today to have a wee look. The building has been transformed. We are going to visit the show flat which has, I am told, a front room which is 33 feet in length. This we must see.
Nice to see an old building revived.
