If you can't beat them...

Haweswater.

Our photographic day began at midnight!  CC had heard on the BBC that there was a chance of seeing the Aurora so midnight found us in our favourite dark spot.  Not a light in sight - not an an Aurora either!

As you might imagine we weren't up terribly early.  We had to visit a supplier in Kirkby Stephen and CC suggested we have a look at Haweswater on the way.  OK we know Haweswater isn't by any stretch of the imagination on the to Kirkby Stephen from our house but you know what I mean.

As we were getting the gear out of the car somebody stopped on the other side of the road and headed off to where we were aiming.  By the time we were across the road and a few yards past the wall they were on the way back having taken their shot.  We took a lot longer!

As we were setting up the tripods clouds mist began to pour over Gatescarth Pass and Nan Bield.  The effect was awesome, the photo doesn't really do it justice.  I call the "stuff mist as you can see wisps of cloud much higher in the sky and over the other side you would have been undoubtedly feeling you were in mist.  This didn't keep going for many minutes so we timed our arrival well.

If you want to get a better idea of what it really looked like look at Clickychick's extra photo here.
