Career Advice
I started working with another NGO -- one whose mission it is to help disadvantaged kids understand various careers options by having speakers and activities that illustrate, interactively, what the profession is all about.
Today was my first gig. The organization had invited a female musician (French horn player) and after the appointed talk, the 5th graders (about 50 of them) were split into groups of 10 and given various "instruments" (clappers, castanettes, and kazoos) and had to prep a small musical piece. One might argue the merits of that choice of activity at the end of a long school day: the noise level rose substantially and the kids went into hyperactive mode, but the valiant volunteers got through their task and to their objectives :)
There's a bit of social commentary I could be making on growing up a young black kid in a disadvantaged setting, but it might not be politically correct and I think I'll sleep on it first...
