Awesome Art

"Northwood Awakening," by Ann and Steven Loveless, was ArtPrize 2015's public grand prize winner, a second win for Ann Loveless. Since I didn't attend ArtPrize I was fortunate enough to view this amazing quilt today while it was displayed at the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort, Michigan. "Northwood Awakening," a mixed-media, two-dimensional entry, 25-feet long and 5-feet tall, portrays the emerging flora in the spring in the woods in Michigan's Lower Peninsula in Benzie County. The collaboration, when viewed left to right, begins as a large-scale photographic print and blends fabrics and textiles, ending in an entirely quilted textile on the right.

ArtPrize is a radically open international art competition decided by public vote and expert jury that takes place each fall in Grand Rapids. For 19 days, art entries from all over the world cover three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan—and it’s all free and open to the public.
