Santo Domingo is the site for many weddings in Oaxaca. As the happy couple exits the church they are greeted by an instant festival.
Fireworks blast, birds or balloons are released, and brilliantly colored dancers with fruit basket headdresses twirl to the sounds of trumpets, clarinets, and drums. The round ball displays the names of the bride and groom (this guy also dances), and the monos , which are the large figures) also dance and spin about the plaza. Sometimes the bride and groom and then other members of the bridal party and congregation join the dancing. Often the entire entourage parades up the street as onlookers cheer and everyone celebrates the beginning of their lives together.
