Traced the fault

on this machine to the front panel where the memory card sockets are. Disconnect that and everything is back to normal. That's a £7 replacement which makes the experience of buying a new motherboard and a new processor rather irritating. 

Back to reality after a fine few family days. Good to know that the standby system is up for presenting a webinar this afternoon.
