Darkness
Hamlet on the big screen last night was almost more than I could bear, particularly as we sat close to said screen, as we cut it a bit close getting to the movie theater after dinner with friends.
I was awestruck by the actors' physical stamina, as well as their ability to make Shakespeare's English understandable today, all the while being filmed from many angles, including tight close-ups, in front of a live audience at the National Theatre. Benedict Cumberbatch's Hamlet and Sian Brooke's Ophelia, in particular, were compelling in every nuance.
Today's weather matches the play's darkness and violence -- we've had strong, gusty winds and a power outage -- fortunately corrected in less than an hour -- and heavy rain is forecast for the next couple of days. These are the last leaves on the Japanese maple see on November 1; I wonder how long they'll hang on?
If you don't see me here for a day or two, you'll know why!
