Cannington Viaduct

We were out today walking with the local walking group in the area around Yawl and Uplyme.  It was a good day to be out especially since the past few days have been so grey and wet.  We were walking through woods, up and down hills and trying not to slip in the muddy areas.  We had a little rain but it was mainly sunny and gusty. This view of the Cannington Viaduct suddenly appeared as we skirted across a road onto another footpath.

The 600 ft viaduct  was opened in 1903 and was the first in the UK to be constructed in concrete. Unfortunately, the builders ran into problems when subsidence was discovered between two of the arches. This was later reinforced by a fill-in arch, which can just be seen in the photo. It is the only remaining part of the Axminster to Lyme Regis railway branch line, which was closed in 1965 during the 'Beeching Cuts'.
