The candle is placed on the windowsill and then lit.  The flame flickers and then settles.  There is something hypnotic about the light, the orange glow of the wick providing the centre and the flame seems alive, moving gently, swaying as if there is a slight breeze.  A second flame appears in the window, the dark night a backdrop to the warm glow of the candle, the second flame moving in tandem with the first.  I sit and stare, my eyes moving between these two flames, transfixed.  My grandmother told me that when you place a lighted candle by a window you are thinking of those people far away and those close to home.  The light is a guide, reaching out into the darkness, wishing them well; hoping they are safe.
